The Transformative Power of Feedback
Today, let's explore the transformative power of feedback, bridging the worlds of leadership and individual excellence."
Feedback serves as a universal driver for growth, whether you're a leader guiding a team or an individual striving for personal and professional development. As John C. Maxwell eloquently stated, "Feedback is the breakfast of champions." It's the compass that helps us navigate our path, regardless of our roles.
For leaders, feedback is a vital tool for transformational leadership. It's the mirror that reflects not only our strengths but also areas for improvement. This self-awareness is the foundation for personal and professional growth, reminding us that even seasoned leaders have room to evolve.
Reflecting on an impactful feedback experience from my personal journey, I recall my natural inclination to maintain a positive outlook and reframe negative situations. This tendency came to light during sessions with an executive coach, where a seemingly simple question emerged: "How was your day?" My automatic response was typically an enthusiastic "GREAT."
However, my coach introduced me to a powerful exercise. She encouraged me to pause, close my eyes, and take a 15-second breath before answering the question, responding from the depths of my emotions rather than just a superficial response. It was in this moment that I realized I was not having a good day as I had initially claimed. I had been masking my true feelings, convincing myself that it was a good day when, in reality, it was not.
This was a revelation for me. My coach gently reminded me that it's absolutely okay to express my true emotions, including feelings of frustration or anger. She emphasized the importance of letting these emotions out and taking the time to recalibrate. This feedback fundamentally changed my perspective, helping me understand that authenticity and emotional honesty are essential not only in personal growth but also in my leadership journey.
Leaders who actively encourage and embrace feedback within their organizations empower their teams to share ideas, concerns, and innovations. This open dialogue nurtures trust and fosters a culture of psychological safety, where everyone's voice is valued. Feedback offers a means to strengthen relationships and drive collaborative high-performance teams.
For individual contributors, feedback is equally transformative. It fuels personal growth and helps in refining skills. It offers a mechanism for self-reflection and continuous improvement, which is essential for excelling in one's role. Moreover, feedback acts as a bridge to build valuable relationships with peers, supervisors, and the broader organization. As an individual contributor, actively seeking and acting upon feedback is a testament to one's commitment to personal and professional growth.
However, it's crucial to acknowledge the potential negative impacts of feedback when it's misused or handled improperly. Ill-timed or poorly phrased feedback can lead to demotivation and confusion among team members. As leaders and individual contributors, it's our responsibility to ensure feedback is delivered with empathy and a sincere desire to support our teammates and focus on their strengths.
We need to be aware of our own unconscious projections. At any given time, we will only see 126 bits out of the possible 2,000,000 bits per second of anything we perceive. This means our perception is our projection of what is going on. Itβs crucial that we are honest with our unconscious projections and step back as leaders, whether leading ourselves, to question our beliefs and attitudes before providing and receiving feedback.
When this takes place, we allow any unconscious projections to rise to the surface and open places to connect. Offering feedback that is heart to heart.
Dealing with these challenges takes time and understanding. People might need help to change how they see themselves and how they act. Giving them guidance and chances to get better can make them better team members and leaders, which is good for everyone. Individuals may need time and support to adjust their mindset and behavior. Providing ongoing guidance and opportunities for improvement is key to helping them develop into more effective team members and leaders, ultimately steering the collective ship towards success.
Feedback is the fuel that powers transformative leadership and drives personal excellence as an individual contributor. It's a tool that can break down silos and create a culture of openness, innovation, and high performance. So, whether you're leading a team or striving for personal growth, remember that feedback is your compass for growth and your navigator towards excellence. Embrace it, use it wisely, and watch it become your ally in your journey towards success.
